Net worth is the simplest measure of overall financial health: everything you own, minus everything you owe. For most Canadian homeowners, home equity is the single largest asset on that list — and often the most overlooked.
This calculator totals your home, savings, and investments against your mortgage and other debts to show your net worth, and separately highlights how much equity is sitting in your home.
4 Steps to Your Results
Use a current market estimate — an appraisal, recent comparable sales, or your municipal assessment as a starting point.
Cash, savings accounts, and investment accounts like RRSPs and TFSAs.
Your current mortgage standing balance plus any other loans, credit cards or lines of credit.
Total assets minus total liabilities, plus a separate line showing your home equity specifically.
With an $800,000 home, $40,000 in savings, $120,000 in investments, a $450,000 mortgage balance, and $20,000 in other debts, total assets come to $960,000 and total liabilities to $470,000.
That leaves a net worth of $490,000 — and within that, $350,000 of home equity, which is the largest single piece of the picture.
Home equity like this is often the biggest untapped asset available for consolidating debt, funding a renovation, or investing — a HELOC or refinance can put it to work.
